CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHOD
Introduction
This chapter presents the method adopted in carrying out the study. It includes research design, population for the study, sample and sampling techniques, validation, reliability, process for data collection and data analysis.
Research Design
According to Adegboye (2000), A survey research is a form of descriptive research which describes systematically a situation or an area of interest factually and accurately. This method in which a researcher engages in a careful and methodological observation of events in the outside world aimed at making decisions on the observed outcome of the data. It therefore makes use of questionnaire and interview in order to determine the opinions, attitudes etc of persons of interest to the researcher.
Population for the Study
According to N.C.C.E (2000), A population in research refers to the
universe or the entire group of persons, objects or events whose
characteristics are being studied. Population may refer to objects or
things. So the target population for the study consists of all deaf
students in the Kwara State school for the handicapped, Ilorin.
The population of the deaf students in the school presently is fifteen
(15), but the total number of handicapped children in the school is 80.
Sample and Sampling Techniques
Sample is a portion of the population that shares all the general characteristics of the population, while
Sampling refers to a process of taking any portion of a population or
universe as representative of that population or universe. Sample used
in this study includes all the deaf students in the school for the
handicapped, Ilorin were picked and interviewed. They were fifteen (15)
in number. This method is adopted so as to enable the researcher collect
data from all the available sample.
Instrument of the study
The instrument for this research work was a questionnaire tagged
“Counselling Needs of the Deaf Students Questionnaireâ€. Questionnaire
(C.N.O.D.S.Q). It is constructed by the researcher form the survey o the
related literature. It is divided into two sections – A and B.
Section A – elicits personal information such as sex, age, religion and parents education.
Section B – seeks information on the counselling need of deaf. The
responses and scoring are of 4, using the adopted four – likert-scale,
that is: - strongly agreed (SA), Agreed (A), Disagreed (D), and Strongly
Disagreed (SD).
They were to tick (√) the appropriate response
to the item of the questionnaire. Marks were also allotted accordingly: -
i.e. SA (4 points), A (3 points), D (2 points) and SD (1 point).
