    • The home environment and the upbringing of children or child rearing practice of parents also is a contributing factor of delinquent behaviour among students in secondary schools. Parents tend to inadequate or ineffective in creating the appropriate condition for training the children as required. Proverb (22:6), says “Train up child in the way he/she should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it”.
Intelligent: - is believed to be a cause of delinquent, the belief is that delinquency is more among the highly intelligent individuals rather than the contrary as an observed case. The dull and low intelligent ones are usually caught in their delinquent acts than the smart and intelligent ones, because they miscalculate most often. They think straight jacketelly and have no operational fluid intelligence, they lack high mental alertness that could have helped then not to be caught. In a situation where the law enforcement agencies are hardworking, struck and non-discriminatory, they are more likely to detect and catch most delinquents both the intelligent and low intelligent ones.
Poverty: - poverty refers to a stake of having very little money and therefore living below standard. In our country many families do not have the quantity be able to provide situation breeds hunger, starvation and predisposes members of such families especially those below 18 to engages in illegal illicit means of survival. These manifests in stealing of money to provide food or materials things for themselves.
Influence of mass media:- which includes:
      -    Television programmes
      -    Video cassettes
      -    Magazines
      -    Newspapers
      -    Audio visual etc. leads to students delinquent behaviours. Television programmes, which show original sexual promiscuous acts, video cassettes shoeing where women snatch another woman’s husbands, immoral programmes in newspaper and magazines.
Notably, evil manners are often learnt more easily and readily than good behaviours. One form of violent or this had been taken by them as an acceptable means of solving problems. The unfortunate audio-visual models include boxing, murder wrestling, carat, kidnapping, injecting etc. Some if not all are fast becoming part of Nigerian culture today.
Lack of quality supervision by parents: - one of the notable responsibilities of parents is to help their children develop good moral judgment, self control and socially approved behaviours. These could only be achieved through living of good exemplary life and by supervising their children without employing double standards. Parents supervision is mostly needed during the adolescent period, when peer influence and desire for adolescent independent are stronger, lack engage into the activities including delinquent acts without knowing what they are doing and the consequences.
Parents in their bid for materialism tend to forget their duties and roles in child rearing to the expenses or the children.
Broken Homes: - A broken home here refers to homes that are not intact and are not living harmoniously. Broken home due to separation of spouses as will as their children, divorce etc. A broken home could take the form of incessant quarrels among family members, husband and wife etc. Children belonging to such homes are mostly hit and affected, because parents seem not to care for their offsprings either physically or emotionally. The abandoned children could take to the streets and try to survive on their own, thereby taking to delinquent acts as means of survival. Such children are usually victims of sub-cultures. They have failed to develop good morals as he/she takes side with one the parents against the other even when the other person may be adjudged right.
Such children go out in search of parental affection, feeling of security, social opportunities and physical necessities of life and in the process they may become delinquent. Apart from the above causes, the following have been observed also as some of the potent causes of delinquency.
      •    Parents being indifferent or hostile to their children.
      •    A good child’s interpersonal relationship or association with delinquent peers.
      •    Parents, especially the father, being harsh to members of the family, unreasonable in his dealings and being inconsistent in controlling family members.
      •    Absence of cohesion, love, sense of belonging and mutual understanding among family members but more especially parents.
      •    Increase mobility of the population. Disruption of well established cultural patterns and family ties.
      •    Increased population growth, slums and social disorganization in large metropolis.
      •    Lack of clear sense of national purpose and direction and concern with social problems.
