CHAPTER THREE
METHODOLOGY
Introduction
This chapter provides information on the research design for the study, sample and sampling procedure, instrumentation administration, validity and reliability, procedure for data collection, scoring and data analysis.
Research Design
The research design that will be adopted for this study is the descriptive survey method. Hassan (1998) described the descriptive survey research as that which represents an attempt to provide an accurate description or picture of a particular situation in phenomenon at one or more points in time. The design does not establish causes and effect relationships but it is identifies variables that lexis in a given situation and describes the relationship which exists between such variable.
Oniye (1997) described descriptive survey as a systematic description of an event in a very factual and accurate manner. This method entails the use of direct observation in the collection of score data. In the descriptive survey research, the effort of researchers in on the collection of information form a representative sample upon which inferences are drawn about attitude or opinion of the target population. In essence, descriptive research in education is often aimed at fact finding regarding a current situation with respect to certain educational problem. The descriptive survey research design is therefore deemed relevant and applicable to this study since it will assist in finding out cause of academic related anxiety employed by students of tertiary institution in Ilorin metropolis of Kwara State.
According to Adewumi (1988) and Omideji, Abiola and Oyeleye (1992) they descriptive survey method which is also called descriptive research method is based on information gathering through questionnaire – interviews, rating scales, self report, observation etc. Descriptive research will be used to find meaning to, and to obtain and understanding of the present condition and the result obtained through this procedure will be analyzed.
The target populations for this study are for all students in tertiary institutions within Ilorin metropolis. A total of three hundred (300) respondents would be selected from the institution to participate in the study.
All the tertiary institutions in Ilorin metropolis would be purposively selected for the study, these are the University of Ilorin, Kwara State College of Education and the Kwara State Polytechnic, the stratified random sampling technique would be then be used to select one hundred (100) respondents form each of the tertiary institution.
Instrumentation
Instrumentation is the process of selecting or developing a measuring device or an appropriate method for a given research.
The instrument employed is a questionnaire which would be developed by the researcher. The questionnaire items were generated from relevant psychological test, reviewed literature and personal experience of the researcher.
The research instrument used for the study titled causes of academic related anxiety Questionnaire (CARAQ). The questionnaire has two sections (A and B section) section A of the questionnaire contain items on the personal information of respondents such as gender, religion, marital status, age, mode of residence and types of institution.
The second which is section B contains items on the causes of anxiety among the tertiary institution students.
Pilot Testing
Twenty copies of the draft questionnaire form were given to twenty respondents of Kwara State College of Education Oro. They responded to the items in the questionnaire and comments on items that are ambiguous. The items were restructured lined with the suggestions revised by the respondents.
