Nigerian Schools Sports started as Hussey shield competition when in 1933 E.R.J. Hussey who was the then Director of Education for the southern provinces donated a shield for athletics competitions among Teachers Training College in both northern and southern provinces. Hussey shield later developed into all secondary school affairs. This motivated the National Sports Commission to establish Nigerian Schools Sports Federation (N.S.S.F.) in 1976. The N.S.S.F. is made up of representatives of schools, national Sports Commission, Ministry of Education, State and School Management Boards. This composition is the pattern at the national and state levels. The body (N.S.S.F) organizes sports festivals every year for primary and post-primary institutions in Nigeria. In 1964, the late Sir Samuel Manuwa donated two magnificent trophies for the first West African inter-University Game, which were held at the University of Ibadan from March 22nd to 29th 1965. The success of these games caused the then National Sports Council to the mute the idea of a Nigerian University Games (Nwabuwe, 2007). However, at a conference of university officials and students in charge of sports, which was held at the University of Ibadan from March 8-10, 1965, Nigerian University games Association was formed.
The creation of a forum for States to discuss matters of mutual interest resulted in a greater awareness within school communities of the benefits provided by sporting activities. This generation of interest eventually led to the formation of the Nigerian Schools Sports Federation in 1976. This body, representing all states and territories became identified as the controlling body of secondary school sport in Nigeria and has continued to develop this role over the years. Since the formation of the Nigerian Schools Sports, there has been significant growth in representative sporting activities, greater liaison and improved relations with community groups and systematic generation of relevant policies aimed at the betterment of school sport. After several years of operation, the role of the Federation was supplemented by the establishment of the National Sports Commission. This body represents Primary schools, Secondary Schools, Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and sports Associations throughout Nigeria (Lindfelt, 2001).
Finally on this note, according to Ukah (2005) in Jeroh (2007), an essential feature in the social unity of any country is co-operation among its people. To achieve this, it is imperative that individuals develop particular traits which help to promote co-operative spirit. Important among these are honesty, respect for others, loyalty, impartiality, fair play and good sportsmanship.
Importance of Sports to Students
Children have to be active every day. Physical activity stimulates growth and leads to improved physical and emotional health. Today, research shows that the importance of physical activity in children is stronger than ever. For example, medical researchers have observed that highly active children are less likely to suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer of the colon, obesity, and coronary heart disease later in life.
Exercise is known to relieve stress. Some children experience as much stress, depression, and anxiety as adults do. And because exercise improves health, a fit child is more likely to be well-rested and mentally sharp. Even moderate physical activity has been shown to improve a child’s skill at arithmetic, reading, and memorization (Ogunbiyi, 2005).
But sport, not just exercise, gives a child more than just physical well-being; it contributes to a child’s development both psychologically and socially. Sport psychologist Dr. Glyn Roberts (2014) emphasizes that sports is an important learning environment for the children. According to him, sport can affect a child’s development of self-esteem and self-worth and that “it is also within sport that peer status and peer acceptance is established and developed.†One way children gain acceptance by their peers is to be good at activities valued by other children.
Because sport is important to children, being good at sports is a strong social asset. Young boys in particular use sports and games to measure themselves against their friends. Children who are competent at sports are more easily accepted by children of their own age, and are more likely to be team captains and group leaders. Such children usually have better social skills (Boit, 2000).
The primary goal of parents and coaches is to help children find the success in sport they need to make them feel valued and wanted. Every child can be successful at one sport or another. Take the time to find the sports that are right for each child.
