CHAPTER FIVE
Conclusion
Sport in Nigeria has grown from its humble beginning as an entertainment and recreational pastime to a prominent phenomenon whose influences are felt in all facets of lives of citizens. It is a very useful tool for all-round development especially of the students. It is used in Nigeria to foster national unity and socio-cultural integration. It is one of the most important phenomena which cut across all human endeavours and ethnic divides. Its invaluable role in students’ lives cannot be over emphasized.
It is, however, worrisome to note that despite its huge benefits, students’ performance in sports is nothing to write home about. Various factors have been identified as being responsible for this poor performance. These include poor facilities, genetic factors, training factors, psychological factors, etc.
As many as these factors seem to be, they are not insurmountable. It is the belief of this study that if the recommendations given are adequately implemented, the problems will be minimal and the students’ performance in sports improved.
Recommendations
In line with the findings of the study, the following recommendations are given.
1. There should be an official sport policy that permanently links education to sports.
2. There should be a plan to catch them young thereby inculcating sports from primary level.
3. All secondary schools should have a playing ground instead of a mere physical education exercises.
4. The government should start with evolving a blueprint for success.
5. There should be a reward scheme of prizes and scholarships to encourage better performance and dedication.
6. There should be provision for more sport facilities and friendly coaches.
7. Parents should be given awareness on the importance of sports to their children and the need to allow the children participate.
8. All heads of schools should be held responsible for lack of maintenance of sports facilities, equipment and supplies.
9. The ministries of education in various states should make annual inter-house sports competitions mandatory for all secondary schools.
10. Enough and sincere attention should be given to sports activities in schools rather than paying mere lip services to them.
It is believed that if these recommendations are adequately implemented, the students’ performance in sports will be improved.
