2.10.0 FIRST AID FOR SNAKE BITES
Should
you be bitten by sakes, it is essential to get emergency treatment as
quickly as possible. However, there are some tips that you should also
keep in mind.
 Note the time of the bite
 Keep calm and still as movement can cause the venom to travel faster quickly through the body.
 Remove constricting cloths or jewelry because the area surrounding the bite will likely swell.
 Don’t allow the victim to walk carry or transport them by vehicle.
 Do not kill or handle the snake, take a picture of it if you can, but don’t waste time hunting it down
2.10.1 FIRST AID MYTHS
There are also several outdated techniques that are now believed to be unhelpful or harmful:
 Do not use a tourniquet
 Do not cut into the snake bite
 Do not use a cold compress on the bite
 Do not give any medication unless directed by a doctor or as instructed laboratory test. (Clotting time WBCT20)
 Do not raise the area of the bite above the victim’s heart
 Do not attempt to suck the venom out by mouth
 Do not use a pump suction device.
These
devices were formed recommended for pumping out snake venom but it’s
now believed that they more likely to do harm than good
2.10.2 TREATMENT FOR SNKAE BITES
The
most important thing to do for a snake bite is to get emergency medical
help as soon as possible. A doctor will evaluate the victim to decide
on a specific cause of treatment, in some cases, a bite from the
venomous snake is not life threatening. The severity depends on the
location of the bite and age healthy of the victim. If the bite is not
serious, the doctor may simply clean the wound and give the victim a
tetanus vaccine.
If the situation in life threatening then the
doctor may administer anti venom, with snake venom to counter the snake
bite symptoms. The anti venom may be administered alongside with the
injection to counter the reaction of the anti venom injection, this
could be given alongside with the following drugs:
1. Caps Ampiclox 500mg qds X 10/7
2. Tabs PCM 1000mg tabs X 5/7
3. Chymoral tabs ii tds x 10/7
4. Vitc 200mg tds x 10/7
5. Loratidine T bo X7 10/7
6. Multivite caps i daily x 5/7
