3.4 INTERVENTION (COMMUNITY INTERVENTION)
Snake bite is a major
public problem in the rural tropics in Southern Nepal, Most death caused
by Neurotoxin envenomation occurs in the village or during transport to
health centers. The effectiveness of victim’s transportable motorcycle
volunteers to a specialized
treatment centre combined with Health
Education was assessed in a non-randomized single arm before-after
study conducted in four villages (Population)= 62, 127) The case of
fatality rate of snake bite decreased from 10.5% in pre-intervention
(relative risk).
SMALL GRANTS SCHEME
Global snake bite initiative,
with generous financial support from CSL Limited is currently funding 5
small research projects with us and 2,000 grants awarded after a
competitive call for interest in 2011.
The (GSI) Small Grants
Scheme is designed to stimulate young researchers and clinicians and
both Epidemiological and Clinical research. The Scheme provides fare
awards of US Dollars 2,000 to candidates.
Summarily, this paper identifies some of the interventions rendered in respect of snake bite victims in the community.
 Strategic Focus: Giants will be offered to support projects which involves any of the following themes:
i. Basic Epidimiological and clinical research
ii. Snake bite prevention projects
iii. Snake bite related public health production activities or community awareness projects
iv. Primary first aid training and education
v. Clinical raining in snake bite treatment and or seminar or conferences about snake bite
vi. Injury rehabilitation for snake bite patients

Testing protocols: to improve treatment and epidemiology of snake bite
in Rural Nigeria By: Dr. Abdulrazap Habib, Dr. Saidu Bala Abubakar Echi
Tab study group, Kaltingo General Hospital Nigeria.
According to this
study group, over past 20years, the Echi Tap study group (a
collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Health Universities of
Oxford and Liverpool and anti-venom manufacture in UK and Costa Rica)
has acquired considerable experience and expertise in the clinical
management of snake bites victims attending Hospitals in Gombe(Kaltingo)
and Plateau Zamko. We are aware that the medical needs of snake bite
victims in other regions of Nigeria are not as well as served. This
proposal exploits the expertise and systems established by the Echi Tab
study group to test new training and data collection systems to:
i. Improve the clinical management of these rural poor.
ii.
Serve to acquire diseases burden and the apparent need data. This
essential information will be presented to the Nigerian Ministry of
Health with a view to implementing Nationwide strategies to manage snake
bites
