    • This study explores the impact and factors influencing inter-group relationships among the Ibiono and Itu people of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The Ibiono and Itu people, both sub-groups of the Ibibio ethnic group, have shared a long history of interactions shaped by migration, trade, intermarriage, political alliances, and occasional conflicts. The research examines the historical background of these interactions, the socio-economic and political factors that have influenced their relations, and the impact of these relationships on their cultural identity, economic development, and political stability.

The study finds that pre-colonial relations between the Ibiono and Itu people were largely cooperative, with trade and cultural exchanges strengthening their ties. However, colonial administration introduced new political structures that sometimes fueled competition and boundary disputes. In the post-independence era, economic interdependence and shared cultural traditions have continued to promote unity, but political rivalry and land disputes occasionally create tensions. The research highlights key factors influencing their inter-group relations, including economic activities, political representation, colonial legacy, and modernization.

The study concludes that while challenges exist, strengthening traditional conflict resolution mechanisms, promoting inclusive governance, and encouraging cultural preservation can foster peaceful co-existence and socio-economic development between the two groups. This study contributes to the broader discourse on ethnic relations in Nigeria by providing insights into how historical and contemporary factors shape inter-group interactions. It recommends policies that can enhance cooperation and mitigate conflict among the Ibiono and Itu people.
