This subsisted till the introduction of the 6-3-3-4 system of education
in 1982 by Professor Aliyu Babatunde Fafunwa the then Minister of
Education under Alhaji Shehu Shagaris (former president) government to
replace the 6-5-4- Colonial system of education (Vanguard June 28,
2012). Following the Universal basic education Act in 2004, former
President, Olusegun Obansanjo introduced the universal basic Education a
social demand approach system of education, normally called the 9-3-4-
system (olorun4jah4.online2011).
With the reviewed of the curriculum
by the Nigerian educational research and Development Council (NERDC),
affiliated with the ministry of education. The senior secondary school
Islamic Studies Curriculum has the content divided into three major
division each with three section, making a total of nine section of
units. The division and units are;
1. Hidayah (Guidance)
Section A The Qur’an
Section B The Hadith
2 Fiqh (Islamic law/Jurisprudence)
Section A Tawhid (Theology)
Section B Ibadah (Worship)
Section C Muiamalat (Human Transactions)
This includes Sharia, marriage, Divorce, custody of children inheritance etc
3. Tarik (Historical development of Islam)
Section A Sirah (The life of Prophet Muhammad and the leadership of the four orthodox caliph
Section B The spread of Islam to West Africa
Section C Contribution of Muslim to world civilization. Abdur-Rauf, (2015).
It is designed mostly for Muslim students in Nigeria Schools. The
syllabus of Islamic studies for the senior secondary school certificate
is meanest to adequately provide for all the relevant level of knowledge
acquisition expected of students that must have passed through the
Junior Secondary School level. It helps to inculcate time and balance
value in the young, at an age when his mental and moral development is
at the formative stage. (NECO, 2009)
Senior School Certificate Examination
In Nigeria, students wishing to attend university must pass the University Matriculation Examination (UME) Adminsitered by the joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) (Europa world) (2008). To be admitted to this university entrance examination, students must first obtain the senior school certificate (SSC) Dibu and Falaye 2005). Student obtain an SSC by passing exam administered by either the West African Examination Council (WAEC) or the National Examination Council (NECO) (Dibu and Falaye 2005). Senior School Certificate Examination is conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) established in 1952 the ordinance agreed to the coordination of exams and issuing of certificate to students in individual countries by the west African Examinations Council (Oluwaseun Osewa, 2015-2017).
The NECO is an examination body, in Nigeria that conducts the examination and the general certificate in education in June/July and December/January respectively it was created by former head of state Abdul-Salam Abubakar in 1999. It was the first Federal Organization to offer subsidized registration to academic candidate in Nigeria.
NECO was mandated to take over the responsibilities of the National Board of Education Measurement (NBEM). Its maiden examination took place in mid-2000.
According to the National Policy of Education (2004) Islamic studies is not a core subject at the senior secondary school, rather, it is an elective subject. This give the secondary school students an option to either offer it on drop it. Islamic studies is not a core subject at the senior secondary schools, rather it is an elective subject. This is a factor that led to the statement of Bidmos (2003) that “Islamic studies is offered by less than one percent of the students population of any institution where it is offered at allâ€.
