    • 1.3 Objective of the study

      The major of this study is to evaluate the benefits of broadcasting in improving adulty literacy in Lagos State. Other specific objectives are:

      1. To find out the educational broadcasting programmes the residents of Lagos are aware of.

      2. To find out the educational broadcasting programmes the residents of Lagos have access to.

      3. To find out how often residents of Lagos access educational broadcast.

      4. To investigate the constraints to the use of broadcasting media.


      1.4 Research Questions

      1. What are the educational broadcasting programmes the residents of Lagos are aware of?

      2. What are the educational broadcasting programmes the residents of Lagos have access to?

      3. How often do residents of Lagos access educational broadcast?

      4. What are the constraints to the use of broadcasting media?


      1.5 Significance of the study

      This study will bring to the knowledge of all the residents of Lagos State and enlighten them on the different kinds of educational programmes that are broadcast in the air and to open their mind and eyes to the need of accessing them and learning from them. This study will also serve as a feedback to the different organizers of these programmes to know how to structure these programmes to reach out to the populace. This study will further serve as a reference material to students and a benchmark to researchers who will carry out research on this or related domain.


      1.6 Scope of the study

      This study focuses on evaluating the benefits of broadcasting in improving adult literacy in Lagos state. The study focuses on finding out the different educational broadcasting programmes residents of Lagos are aware of, have access to and how often they access these programmes. The study also delves into investigating the constraints to use of broadcasting media in Lagos state. The residents of Lagos state constitute the population of this study.

      1.7 Limitation of the study

      Finance, time and availability of relevant materials were the major constraints that the researcher encountered while carrying out this study.


      1.8 Definition of terms

      Evaluation: a systematic determination of a subject's merit, worth and significance, using criteria governed by a set of standards.

      Benefit: an advantage or profit gained from something.

      Broadcasting: the distribution of audio or video content to a dispersed audience via any electronic mass communications medium, but typically one using the electromagnetic spectrum (radio waves), in a one-to-many model.

      Literacy: the ability to read, write and use numeracy, to handle information, to express ideas and opinions, to make decisions and solve problems.
