This study was carried out to examine the role of social media in curbing cyber crimes among students of institute of management and technology. The study was carried out to determine the extent of cyber crimes committed by students of institute of management and technology, determine the types of cyber crimes committed by students of institute of management and technology, find out whether social media can be used in curbing cyber crimes among students of institute of management and technology, and examine ways social media can be used in curbing cyber crimes among students of institute of management and technology.
The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of students of institute of management and technology, Lagos State, Nigeria.In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 229 respondents and 210 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, while the hypotheses was tested Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that the extent cybercrimes are committed by students of institute of management and technology is high. Furthermore, the study revealed that the various forms of cyber crimes committed by students of institute of management and technology include; hacking, credit card fraud, software piracy, cyber identity theft.Therefore, it is recommended that to it is important for NGOs and media organizations to start campaign against cybercrimes on social media to discourage perpetrators and increase the knowledge of young adults about the dynamics of cybercrimes.
