2.5.2 Modern method of threshing
Modern methods of threshing grains involve the use of mechanization to thresh grains to reduce the problems encountered in traditional method. Some of the modern methods are:
2.5.2.1 Em-bee power thresher;
MartinBernlio,indiadevelopmed a power thresher called embee.In this all steel thresher is fettled with a threshing cylinder grain auger and elevator. The both hands and the heads are threshed between the loops of the rotating cylinder and the concave screen.
2.5.2.2 Midget thresher
This threshers has been developed from a design by the national institute of agricultural engineering in the U.kIt has a drum and concave mechanism with three rasp bar. The machine is normally supplied without any cleaning mechanism, although this can be provided. The output when threshing rice with five operators and using 93.h.p machine is approximately 650kghr-1 wheat and some other small grain crops such as bean or sorghum requires a change of pulley to reduce the drum speed, special attachment can be provided for shelling of maize and groundnuts. This is as shown in figure 2.1
2.5.2.3 FGN pedal operated thresher
Federal Government of Nigeria design and fabricated this thresher which consist of a seed stripping disc which is rotated in vertical plane by a foot operated wheel crank mechanism at 700-1000rpm. Stripper disc is made of mild steel with spikes of 5mm diameter and 10-20mm length. Spikes are radically wielded on disc. (Adewuyi,2009).
