Statement of Problem
Secondary
school students have many obstacles to overcome in order to achieve
optimal academic performance. A number of researches have been done
looking at the correlation of many stress factors that students
experience and the effects of stress on their performance. However, a
review of literature indicates that not much have been prioritized on
the stress-related research. Moreover, a majority of the investigation
has taken place in the United States of America and the emphasis was
placed more on the students in the medical field.
However, there is
not much research conducted to examine these particular findings in our
local secondary schools and particularly in Oredo Local Government Area
of Edo State.
Therefore, it is timely to conduct research to examine
this particular issue as findings from the present study would benefit
various parties in the secondary schools especially the students and the
teachers in planning and conducting necessary programmes for the
students so that stress-related factors could be reduced and better
academic performance could be achieved by the students.
Purpose of the Study
The
study attempts to find out the effects of stress on the academic
performance of students of secondary Edo state. To achieve this purpose
the following objectives were set;
1. To find out if secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area under stress.
2. To examine the effects of stress on academic performance of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area.
3. To find out the common causes of stress among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area.
4. To find out how stress affect the health of the secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area.
Research Questions
1. Are secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area under stress?
2. Does stress affect academic performance of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area?
3. What are the common causes of stress among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area.
4. How does stress affect the health of the secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area?
Significance of the Study
The
finding of this study, after it has well been disseminated will create
an awareness on what stress is, its causes and its effect on academic
performance of students. The following will benefit from this work;
1.
Secondary school students: to help them manage their activities in
order to reduce stress and improve their academic performance.
2. Teachers: to help them plan the activities of the schools in other to minimize stress on the students.
3.
School management: to help them improve the activities of the school in
order to include exercises that will help ease the stress on the
students thereby improving their overall academic performance.
4.
Edo State and Nigeria at large will benefit from this study as better
academic background for the youth adds value to the society as a whole.
