CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.0 STUDY DESIGN
The research design adopted for this study is a descriptive survey method.
The descriptive survey seems to ascertain students’ responses on a comparison of performance of radiography students on computer based and written examinations.
3.1 SOURCE OF DATA
Primary source of data was used to collect the data.
Secondary source of data was also gotten from result records data base of the department for comparison. Hence it was a mixed data source.
3.2 STUDY POPULATION
The population for the study included radiography students ranging from 200 level to 500 level with estimated population of 300 students (based on records from the department in the 2015/2016 academic session)
3.3 SAMPLE SIZE
A total number of 171 students(200L-45,300L-45,400L-45,500L-36) was used for this study and is deduced by using Yamane’s formula n = N /1+N (e)2
where n = sample size N = population size and
e = level of precision Using N=300 and e=0.05
n= 300/ 1+300(0.0025) = 171. ESTIMATED SAMPLE SIZE USED, 171 ACTUAL SAMPLE SIZE USED, 171
3.4 SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
A quota sampling technique and simple random sampling was used to administer the questionnaires to one hundred and seventy one students and the whole questionnaires were retrieved.
3.5 INCLUSION CRITERIA
Radiography students from 200 level to 500 level of the department of Radiography, University of Maiduguri, Borno State.
3.6 EXCLUSION CRITERIA
100 level students of Radiography, lecturers and other paramedical students.
3.7 INSTRUMENT OF DATA COLLETION
The research was conducted using a structured and open ended questionnaire and was divided into four sections. Section A was a demographic profile while
section B was meant to obtain data on CBE, while section C was on comparison between CBE and PPE, while section D was on physical structure/facilities.
3.8 METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS
Data was collected and analyzed using statistical package of social sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 (IBM, US, NEW YORK) where descriptive statistics using tables, percentages, frequency and mean were generated. Also, chi-square was used to compare the differences in performance between CBE and PPE. A developed questionnaire was submitted to my project and co-project supervisors to obtain face and content validity and pilot study/pre-testing of the questionnaires was carried out among 10 students from the department. Necessary corrections and modifications were made to the questionnaire as per findings from the pre-testing and supervisor’s scrutiny.
3.9 ETHICAL CONSIDERATION
Clearance to conduct the research was obtained from the ethical committee in department of radiography at the University of Maiduguri. For each class visited, an informed consent was obtained from eligible respondents. Respondents were assured that the information obtained from them was for purposes of the study and was to be treated with utmost confidentiality.
