CHAPTER THREE
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION METHOD
Twin panel metal door consists of two (2) doors which are the big and the small door. However, it is divided into several units (Gregory, 1987). These units are:
The frame unit
The panel unit
The lock unit
The hinges unit
The handle unit
The stopper unit
The Frame Unit
This is the unit that will be fasten and hook to the wall and also hold the door panel. Because of its dual role it was made with a strong and thick square pipe (mm thick).
The Panel Unit
This is the main movable unit that can be opened and closed respectively. The panel is made up of the big and small door panel which is joined to the frame at one end with the aid of hinges for adequate movement of the panel. The fit in between the frame unit and the panel unit is clearance fit which allows for easy opening and closing of the door
The Locking Device Unit
This is the unit that is designed and constructed to give maximum security for safety reasons. It is fixed on the panel door by using bolt and nuts and it is usually opened with the use of key.
The Handle Unit / Hank Unit
This is attached mechanism used to open or close a door. The location of the door handle on the may vary between a few inches or centimeters away from the edge of the door to the exact centre of the door depending on local culture, decorative style or owner preference.
This distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the handle is called backset.
The Stopper Unit
The unit is the unit which is welded to the door
frame unit with an electric arc welding machine. It helps to stop the
panel door from exceeding the limit when closed.
