CHAPTER THREE
3.1 MATERIALS AND METHODS
3.2.0 Study Population:
3.2.1 Exposed Subjects
The population for the study was centred on apparently healthy female undergraduate students who are cosmetic users. Subjects were also chosen considering exclusion criteria like chronic smokers as well as alcoholism.
3.2.2 Non-Exposed Subjects (Control)
Apparently healthy female participants that completely do not use cosmetics, recruited from the Malete Campus Community of the Kwara State University formed the non-exposed subjects in this study.
3.2.3 Inclusion Criteria
a) Exposed subjects comprised of apparently healthy student who must have been using cosmetics for more than 3 years
b) Control subjects were apparently healthy female individuals who were not cosmetic users.
3.3 Sample Collection
Five millilitres (5ml) of venous blood was collected by venepuncture from the cubital fossa of both study and control subjects into a Lithium Heparin container. The sample was spun in a centrifuge at a regulated speed of 3000rpm for 5minutes to obtain the plasma which was used for the analysis.
3.4 Sample Size
The sample size for this study was obtained using the formula described by (Daniel, 1999).
The sample size for this study was then determined based on three factors:
1. The estimated prevalence of variable interest from literature review.
2. Confidence interval of 95%.
3. The acceptable margin of error.
