3.0 MATERIALS AND METHOD
3.1 Study Area
The Kwara State is located in the North-Central geopolitical region of Nigeria on latitude 80 24’ and 80 36’ North and longitude 40 10’ and 40 36’ East of the Greenwich Meridian with an elevation of 290m above sea level. It has a total area of 36,825 km2 with a total population of 2,371,089 (population.gov.ng). It is bounded to the west by Republic of Benin; to the north by Niger State, to the east by Kogi State and to the south by Ekiti, Oyo and Osun State. However, Ilorin has about 814,192 inhabitants (Kolapo and Oladimeji, 2008). The primary ethnic group is Yoruba, with significant Nupe, Bariba, and Fulani minorities.
This study is conducted in five market seach from the three geopolitical zone of Kwara State. Kwara central geopolitical zone(Ojaoba, Ojatitun and Ago market in Ilorin West,Ipata, Kulende market in Ilorin east),Kwara south (Ojaoba, Owode Market located in Offa Township, and Omu-Aran Market in Irepodun) and Kwara North (Shareeand Lafiagiin Irepodun Local Government).
3.2 Collection of Samples
The three geo-political zones which were represented by five major towns were chosen for the sample collection in order to ensure adequate representative sampling. However, one town from each geo-political zone was selected and one or two markets from each of the zone were used for the sampling collection. Three samples each of hawked Kunu, Pito, Soy milk and Zobo drinks were collected by purchasing randomly from five different locations which were public market places where these drinks were sold to the unsuspecting community. The samples were collected aseptically into sterile plastic containers and properly labeled kept at 40C before analysis. Total numbers of drinks collected were seventy five (75). The samples were transported immediately into the laboratory and subjected aseptically to microbiological analysis in the Microbiology Laboratory at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. The studies lasted January to February, 2018.
