    • 2.10 FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE CHOICE OF NURSING     CAREER.
          A comprehensive literature review revealed that the perception of nursing as a career choice is influenced by many factors worldwide and several articles have been written about nursing as a career. The literature that is related to why high school student choose a career is influenced by a multitude of factor. One of the many factors that influence people’s choice in life is having a career which is good and stable other factor include;
      1.   FAMILY BACKGROUND AND SUPPORT were indentified
          Family Background And Support Were Indentified as important predisposing factors in many of the studies reviewed. Leach and zepke (2005) established that the decision making process for young peoples begins age and is manly related to the motion of whether or not the young person will attend tertiary education or not . Socio- economic status of the family is linked to the early decision making process .Some studies identified family background and support generally as a factor in career decision making (Donkery and Barns, 2006). However, this study also suggested that family support may not always be positive as it was also noted that some family member tends to tell their children what job they should do even through this may not have been an interest area for their child.
       A study done in Hong Kong school that the student decision to choose or not choose nursing was significantly influenced by factors like gender , biology subject pursued previous academic achievement and mother’s occupation and the student’s perception. The parent, the school teachers\,friend past experience with career activities and working in hospital were some of the influences that  made the         student have the intent to study nursing (Law And Arthur, 2006).
      2.  GENDER FACTOR
          Gender is a very powerful factor in the choice of nursing has remained a highly female determined profession, and men constituted a very small percentage of the nursing work force Gender I a well-recognized influenced on career choice and gender role orientation is an integral component of early childhood socializing. finding has demonstrated that nursing as a career choice is based largely on the perception that. it is a female job. Despite increase in the number of men in nursing remain prevalent (2ys berg and berry,2006).
      3.  COMMUNITY PERCEPTION / CULTURAL INFLUENCE
           The perception of nursing profession among the ordinary citizen and the community has great effect on the perception of high school students to attend nursing and to choose it as future career.
          Culture is also well recognized within socialization research as an important influence on career choice. The definition of culture was not always explicitly stated with the literature and therefore limits interaction as to weather cultural influences relate to ethnicity, generational group, relation or other symbolic structures finding in relation to ethnic culture reveal that interaction between cultural beliefs, values and social arrangement often embody how individuals choose to live their lives, including decisions in relation to career choice.(Dombecck;dorcy).
          Career choice in nursing has been studied in a variety of cultures and distinct differences in relation to career orientation have been indentified (lai et al; 2006).Despite a lack of focus specifically on career choice, existing literature provides some insight into how early experiences influences perception of nursing and the decision to enter the profession. The opportunity to contribute to the health of one’s culture and be reflective of one’s cultural group has been a recognized motivator in the decision to choose nursing (Kat2, 2007).
