CHAPTER THREE
METHOD
This chapter has to do with the method employed in this study. They include the following:
PARTICIPANTS
Hundred students from Idemili-South Local Government Area of Anambra State served as the participants in the study. The participants consist of 43 (43%) males from three public secondary schools and 57 (57%) females from three public secondary schools. The students were from different families of different socio-economic status (high, middle and low). The participants were selected using Simple Area Sampling Method. The ages of the participants ranged from 12 to 24 years with a mean age of 18.32 and standard deviation of 3.76.
INSTRUMENTS
A 30-item questionnaire on academic performance was used in the study. The instrument was made up of two sections. The first section is section “A†which has to do with academic performance. The other section is section “B†which has to do with the personal data. The section B consists of questions that can be used to determine the gender and the socio- economic status of the students. However, the instrument is based on five point Likert format: 5 = Very True, 4 = True, 3 = Undecided, 2 = Not True and 1 = Not True at all.
The scoring was based on direct order and each participant was expected to get a minimum score of 20 and maximum score of 100.
VALIDITY
The researcher constructed the instrument and gave the questionnaire to 6 senior Lecturers in the department of Psychology to judge the items whether they are measuring what they are supposed to measure. Based on this, the items that 60% of the Lecturers judged as relevant were selected. Based on this, about 30 items were selected.
RELIABILITY
The researcher randomly selected 30 students from Nnamdi Azikiwe University as participants for the pilot study. Using split-half, an alpha coefficient of 0.69 was obtained. This indicated that the instrument has a high internal reliability.
PROCEDURE
The researcher first went to the school to seek the approval of the school principal before conducting the research. After proper introduction, the researcher was permitted to conduct the research on a given date.
On the agreed date, the researcher went to the school for the research. Through the help of the principal, the researcher was able to administer 120 questionnaires on the students after adequate rapport creation. However, despite the instruction given to the students, 20 of the questionnaires were not properly filled. On the whole, a total of 100 questionnaires were collected for data analysis. After collecting the questionnaires, the students were dismissed.
DESIGN/ STATISTICS
The research design was independent subject design. Based on the design Independent T. Test and One Way Analysis of Variance (One Way ANOVA) were used as the most appropriate statistics.
