The removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria has sparked significant debate due to its widespread effects across various sectors, including education. This study examines the impact of fuel subsidy removal on teachers' and students' performance towards academic achievement, focusing on Federal University Kashere, Gombe State. The study highlights how the removal of subsidies has increased the cost of living, transportation, and educational resources, directly affecting teachers’ motivation and students' academic performance. Previous research suggests that teachers face heightened stress due to lower disposable income, which negatively influences their teaching effectiveness. Similarly, students encounter challenges such as increased absenteeism, reduced study time, and difficulty accessing educational materials.
While some studies argue that subsidy removal could boost government revenue and potentially benefit education through increased investment, the immediate negative effects on teachers, students, and the overall learning environment remain concerning. The study also explores the psychological effects of subsidy removal and the coping strategies adopted by teachers and students. Through an analysis of these factors, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the socio-economic challenges brought about by the fuel subsidy removal and offer policy recommendations to mitigate its adverse impacts on academic achievement in Nigeria.
