1.5 NULL Hypotheses
The following hypotheses were raised and testing at a significance level of p≤0.05:
i. There is no significant difference between the mean study habit scores of male and female Junior Secondary School students in Social Studies in Nasarawa State.
ii. There is no significant difference between the mean study habits scores of Junior Secondary School students in Social Studies based on different age groups in Nasarawa State.
iii. There is no significant difference between the mean study habits scores of Junior Secondary School students in Social Studies based on different hawking time in Nasarawa State.
iv. There is no significant difference between the academic performances of Junior Secondary School students in Social Studies based on their gender in Nasarawa State.
v. There is no significant difference between the academic performances of Junior Secondary School students in Social Studies based on different age in Nasarawa State.
vi. There is no significant difference between the academic performances of Junior Secondary School students in Social Studies based on different hawking time in Nasarawa State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study sought to find out the influence of hawking time and study habit on academic performance of students. The findings of this study therefore, are expected to contribute to the understanding of situation of in-school child-street hawkers and ways of handling it to ensure improvement in their academic performance while combining schooling and hawking. It is hope that, this study will benefit school administrator, teachers, Parent Teachers Association (PTA), parents/guardians and researchers.
To the school authorities, the findings of this study are expected to be useful in planning guidance and counselling to students involve in street hawking.
To the teacher the findings of the study are expected to be useful in teaching of students. For example the teacher when delivering lesson will consider the street hawker as those with special needs and give them more attention and encouragement to participate in the lesson.
To the Parent Teachers Association the findings of this study are expected to be useful as adviser to the parents. For example parents can be advised to monitor the academic progress of their children and provide them supportive environment such as; learning material, enough time to rest, and assistance in home work.
To the researcher, the findings of this study are expected to provide information for further study.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study was delimited to Northern Senatorial District of Nasarawa state. The target population was all the Junior Secondary School three students who engage in street hawkers. Only students from public schools in the area are considered in this study. The study involved only day secondary schools. The schools are more suitable for the study because boarding schools confine the students in the boarding house in which participation in income generating activity like street hawking is less likely. More so, only urban schools were considered due to due to security challenge in rural areas in Nasarawa state as a result of the conflict between herdsmen and farmers of some of the school in rural areas were closed at the time of this study.
