Family size refers to the number of children in the reference family.
The larger the family the less the attention and devotion of each child
by the parents and the more the difficulties encountered by the parent
in meeting the need of the children both physically and emotionally
particularly in this austerity period, when the price of food, and
commodities are sky rocketed. No wonder the federal government of
Nigerian is making a move to limit the number of children by a female to
four. It is a good, move in the right direction although the populace
themselves are regulating child bearing due to the present economic
conditions. The fewer the family the better is the rule.
The
position a child occupies in a family equally plays a significant role
in his development and academic achievement. Generally the first child
enjoys most particularly among the middle class and the rich. The parent
are excited and determined to give him all he needs. They are generally
over protected and have tendency to become spoilt due to the types of
family they come from due to some of the facts stated above, some of
them that are undetermined achieve low academic excellence.
In
few cases, particularly among the ‘poor’ they labour seriously to
achieve academic excellence and hence pave way for those behind them.
The last born are generally rotten in that they are adequate provided
for not only by their parents but equally by their brother and sister.
The mere fact that their brother is a lawyer and their sister is a
doctor blind folds them to the extent that they them selves will not
work hard. In other words they are relaxed by their elder’s
achievements. However, there are exceptional cases too.
Family Background and Poor Academic Performance of Students
The family is the primary socializing agent of which a child is a
member since it is in the family the child is born one may rightly say
that the family is the informal socializing agent since all its member
are blood relations. At this junction it must be clearly known the
families differ vastly in terms of their significance in social order as
some have more prestige dignity, money and power than others. However,
despite these differences in families, a child in the family remains
exactly a like for the following reasons.
• The people surrounding the child here are generally adults full of experience.
• The child lives his early life in the family and equally develops his first language.
•
Since they are of the same blood, they all work together to would him
in a way that he will perfectly fit into the society.
• For the same reasons given above they will not intentionally misdirect him.
• There is free interaction among the family members which promotes better understanding.
• There is imposition of the social norm on the child through punishment and praises.
•
A child in the family is having his primary exposure to the world and
hence he is totally guided by the adults in his family most especially
the parents.
• Finally a child in the family is immune to all the
social ills in the society under normal condition or in an ideal
situation.
Summary of Related Literature Reviewed
Looking at
the above literature review, it is evident that several research works
has been conducted on the influence socio-economic status on students
performance most people are of the opinion that socio economic status
are solely responsible for the students performance in the schools but
in spite of this opinion held, the fact still remains that socio
economic issue in just one of the factors that determines the students
performance in school.
However, this present research work aim at
examining further influence of socio-economic status already noted by
different researchers as it influence student performance in social
studies, by way of verifying the already advanced.
The
reviewed literature presented showed that students academic performance
depend on the social economic status of the parents.
It was proved also that, the parents with higher education are well informed about the value of education.
Owoyele (2008), highlighted two forms of poor academic performance as
low academic performance and academic under performance is enormous.
Duntoye (2007), also expressed that children from face various types
of problems such as psychological. These problems mentioned cause poor
academic performance of the students.
Viatoun (2004), describes
that the income of a family is the factor of commodities and service,
including money available to the family for the satisfaction of the
family needs and wants.
However the occupations as the parents
are claimed related to the parent’s income in which there is no way one
can conquer challenges without the money.
Adufe (2007), also made
on assertion that occupation of the head of the family associated with
the learning situation in the family. He explained that if occupation is
creative the children in the family are likely to be well fed, well
clothed and well provided with toys, books and other that can promote
the academic performance of the children.
However, whatever a
man becomes can not be divorced from his origin and home background. An
adage says charity begin at home. Therefore, if the home background is
faulty, the student will have problems in his/her learning and general
academic performance.
